Can Meshtastic devices work without Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the internet?​

Applicable models: N30, N32, N33, N35, N36, N37, N37E, N39

Yes. Meshtastic devices communicate with other compatible nodes through LoRa radio without relying on cellular service or internet access.

You can connect a compatible device to your smartphone through Bluetooth and use the Meshtastic app to send and receive messages.

The devices must be within radio communication range, either directly or through compatible mesh nodes.

Applicable models: N30, N32, N33, N35, N36, N37, N37E, N39

  1. Power on your device and enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.

  2. Download and open the Meshtastic app.

  3. Navigate to the device connection screen and select your device.

  4. Follow the pairing instructions and enter the Bluetooth PIN if prompted.

  5. Configure the correct LoRa region before transmitting messages.

If your device does not appear, restart it and make sure it is running compatible Meshtastic firmware.

A successful Bluetooth connection does not necessarily mean the LoRa radio link is working.

Make sure both devices have matching LoRa settings, including the region, modem preset, and frequency slot. For private channels, the channel settings and encryption keys must also match.

Check the antenna connections and test the devices at a short distance in an open area.

If communication still fails, verify that both devices are running compatible firmware and check whether either device reports a LoRa initialization error.

Can different Meshnology device models communicate with each other?​

Applicable models: N30, N32, N33, N35, N36, N37, N37E, N39

Yes. Different Meshnology models can communicate with one another when they use compatible Meshtastic firmware, matching radio settings, and supported regional frequencies.

For example, an N30 can exchange messages with an N37 or N39 when the devices are configured correctly.

However, Meshtastic and MeshCore use different communication protocols. Devices running these two firmware systems cannot directly exchange native mesh messages without a compatible bridging solution.

Do I need two devices to start using Meshtastic?​

You can configure and test a single Meshtastic device using the smartphone app.

However, sending messages over LoRa requires another compatible node within radio range.

If an existing Meshtastic network is available in your area, one device may be enough to join it. Otherwise, we recommend starting with two devices to test communication and build your own local network.
